What do I need to enjoy a film? Somehow that’s a difficult question and without a clear answer. First what comes to my mind would be a good story, but I saw few films that even with a great idea for a storyline were a disappointment by the end. One of the examples can be Tim Burton’s “Mars Attacks!”. This was one of his weakest pieces of work, outcome was poor even that a comedy based on an alien invasion sounds great, doesn’t it?
I think humour shouldn’t be considered as a factor of enjoyment as well, because many films aren’t suppose to be funny and we can still enjoy watching them. I enjoyed watching “Black Swan”, “Shutter Island” or “Requiem for a Dream” but I just can’t remember of any humorous scene from them, that just wasn’t important for my general view on a movie.
I would guess that strong characters and their development would be a important factor for me, but on the other hand, characters from popular comedies such as “The Hangover” weren’t really complex, or three-dimensional character.
It just depends on my mood if I’ll enjoy specific film, those elements listed wouldn’t really matter. Sometimes I’ll just enjoy some deep storyline without funny parts, explosions etc. but sometimes I’ll just enjoy watching some silly comedy and then things such as storyline, meaning and a message aren’t important.
